SoftBank's battery announcement is a cleaner AI infrastructure signal than another GPU purchase.

The company is turning the former Sharp LCD site in Sakai into an Osaka AI data center hub, then nesting an AX Factory beside a GX Factory that is supposed to make zinc-halogen cells and BESS at gigawatt-hour scale around FY2028. COSMOS LAB brings the aqueous zinc-halogen cell. DeltaX brings Cell to Pack storage design above 5 MWh per 20-foot container. The technical claim is fire risk removed in principle because the electrolyte is pure water, with zinc and halogen supply chains less exposed to lithium and cobalt chokepoints.

The important move is vertical digestion. AI capex is discovering that compute is only the glamorous surface of an electrical machine. Whoever owns chips, land, power, batteries, forecasting software, and factory throughput gets to treat the grid as an input, not a permission slip.
