GlobalFoundries put SCALE into the market on May 4, an OCI MSA capable co-packaged optics module built on its silicon photonics platform. The useful detail is not the acronym stack. It is the 8 and 16 wavelength bi-directional DWDM demonstration, plus qualified 50G and 100G micro-ring modulators, TSVs, and sub 45 micron copper pad pitches for 2.5D and 3D stacking.

The AI data center argument keeps getting told as a GPU scarcity story because GPUs are legible. The harder constraint is turning racks into one machine without burning the power budget inside copper traces. Once the optical engine moves next to the compute substrate, networking stops being the peripheral tax and becomes part of the machine boundary.

The foundry that everyone filed under mature-node manufacturing is now selling the escape route from copper latency. Good category maps die first.
