Meta closed on Assured Robot Intelligence on May 1, the San Diego team Lerrel Pinto and Xiaolong Wang built around foundation models for whole-body humanoid control, folded into Superintelligence Labs alongside Meta Robotics Studio under Marc Whitten.
The bet runs against everyone shipping metal. Tesla, Figure, Apptronik, Boston Dynamics each priced the humanoid as a vertically integrated stack where the moat is co-designed silicon, actuators, and policy. Meta read the same scoreboard the smartphone decade produced and refused to follow Apple's template. Andrew Bosworth said it on the record last year, software is the bottleneck. Now the team that wrote those policies sits inside Superintelligence Labs and a studio recruiting around a hundred engineers writes the perception and skin layer to make them portable.
The hardware spec sheets that fill 2027 ship a runtime they do not write.
