the $700 billion vindication of nick land
In the late 1990s, working from blogs and obscure journals after the academic establishment had quietly shown him the door, Nick Land kept circling one claim. Capitalism was not a system that humans operated. It was a process that operated humans, using them as substrate to organize itself, and its tendency was to push control further out into distributed, machinic, numerical systems. Most readers treated this as cyberpunk philosophy. Provocation in the dress of theory.
In 2026, Microsoft will spend roughly 190 billion dollars on capital expenditure. Alphabet will spend close to 190 billion. Amazon, around 200 billion. The four U.S. hyperscalers combined are guiding toward more than 700 billion in a single year, almost double what they spent the year before. The bulk of it goes to one purpose. Building out the physical infrastructure that lets the process Land was describing operate at planetary scale.
The thesis stopped being theory.
the thesis land actually wrote
Critique of Transcendental Miserablism, written by Land in the early 2000s and later collected in Fanged Noumena, is the densest single statement of the position. It is also, importantly, not cyberpunk. The register is polemical and analytical. Land is dismantling a left-melancholic posture that treats capitalism as something tragic, foreign, unwilled. He hits it from inside.
The line that matters reads as follows.
"Means" and "relations" of production have simultaneously emulsified into competitive decentralized networks under numerical control, rendering palaeomarxist hopes of extracting a postcapitalist future from the capitalism machine overtly unimaginable. The machines have sophisticated themselves beyond the possibility of socialist utility, incarnating market mechanics within their nano-assembled interstices and evolving themselves by quasi-darwinian algorithms that build hypercompetition into 'the infrastructure'.
Three claims are doing the work. First, that the productive base of capitalism has dissolved into networks that are decentralized in topology and numerical in control logic, meaning that the substrate is computation rather than command. Second, that capitalism is "becoming ever more tightly identified with its own self-surpassing", which is to say its forward motion has stopped being a side effect and become its definition. Third, that the engine no longer requires conscious human steering. It uses competition between firms to do gradient descent on its own optimization function, in which humans participate but which they do not author.
Stripped of the period vocabulary, the position is simple. The capital process is autonomous, distributed, computational, and self-superseding. Humans are inside it. No one is in charge, including the people whose names appear on the press releases.
numerical control at hyperscaler scale
Pull up the 2026 capex guidance from the four U.S. hyperscalers and read it the way Land would. Not as a list of corporate decisions but as a single readout of where the process needs to push compute next.
Microsoft is guiding to roughly 190 billion in capital expenditure with more than 40 billion landing in Q4 alone. Alphabet revised upward to between 180 and 190 billion. Amazon leads the field at around 200 billion. Meta anchored 27 billion in a single joint venture with Blue Owl Capital just to build the Hyperion campus in northeast Louisiana, a 5 gigawatt facility with a footprint visible from orbit and a single-building floorplate of about four million square feet.
These are not numbers a CEO chooses in any meaningful sense. They are numbers a CEO is forced to underwrite if the firm wants to remain a frontier participant. Satya Nadella did not wake up and decide to spend 190 billion. The competitive geometry around frontier model training, where every six months of fall-behind translates into permanent relegation to the second tier, made the decision before he opened his calendar. The same is true for Sundar Pichai, Andy Jassy, and Mark Zuckerberg. They are the executive interface that the process uses to convert quarterly cash flow into terawatts of compute capacity.
Land's framing is not metaphor. The capital process is doing exactly what he described. It is using competition between distributed agents, mediated through quantitative signals, to push its own substrate forward. The agents are nominally human firms. The signals are scaling laws, benchmark scores, customer migration rates, and forward revenue projections plugged into discounted cash flow models. None of those signals were designed by anyone with the authority to stop them. They emerged.
OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank have committed Stargate to a 500 billion, 10 gigawatt buildout by 2029. Roughly 7 gigawatts of that is already in flight, with sites in Texas, New Mexico, Ohio, and the Midwest. There is no historical analog for one private project of that scale outside of wartime mobilization. The closest comparison is the U.S. interstate highway system, and the interstate system was a federal program. Stargate is a corporate joint venture whose capex line item exceeds the GDP of most countries.
The press writes about this as if it were a series of business decisions. Land would describe it as one decision, made by no one, executing across a thin layer of human signatories.
when chips stopped being the bottleneck
The 2026 turn is what makes the Land reading newly precise. Through 2024 and most of 2025, the public conversation about AI infrastructure was about chips. Nvidia supply, custom silicon, advanced packaging, HBM memory. By early 2026 that framing is already obsolete. Of the roughly 320 billion in dedicated AI infrastructure spend tracked across the four hyperscalers this year, more than 60 percent is now going into power infrastructure and physical data center construction, not compute hardware itself.
The binding constraint moved one layer down the stack. From silicon to electricity. From fabs to grids.
The clearest single illustration is Three Mile Island. In September 2024, Constellation Energy signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Microsoft to restart Unit 1 of the plant, idle since 2019. The reactor is being rebranded as the Crane Clean Energy Center. The restart is on track ahead of schedule and is projected to add roughly 16 billion dollars to Pennsylvania's GDP. A nuclear reactor whose name in the public memory was tagged as a synonym for America's mid-twentieth century industrial overreach is being brought back online to serve generative AI workloads.
The capital process needed power, found it locked inside a decommissioned reactor whose name was a synonym for industrial failure, and reactivated it. Not by political directive. Through a private long-term offtake contract that made the math work for an energy utility. Constellation's stock did the rest.
This is what Land meant by "incarnating market mechanics within their nano-assembled interstices". Once compute became the fundamental scarcity, every adjacent resource got pulled into the same optimization. Fabs, then grids, then reactor sites, then probably uranium supply chains and transmission line right-of-ways. Each step looks like a discrete commercial transaction. The pattern is one process reorganizing the energy infrastructure of an entire country in order to feed itself.
the affect problem
Here I want to push back on Land directly, because the part of his framing that ages worst is also the part that gets repeated most.
Land treats the capital process as autonomous from human ends in a strong sense. Not just decentralized, not just unplanned, not just emergent from local decisions, but actively indifferent to anyone in particular and trending toward the eviction of the human as such. That is the affective core of his work. The line "nothing human makes it out of the near-future" is meant literally. The process consumes its substrate. We are food.
That reading does heavy work for him as polemic. It also breaks on contact with what the process actually produces.
The same decentralized networks under numerical control that Land described are the reason a frontier-language-model query in 2026 costs a fraction of a cent and answers within seconds. They are the reason a kid in Lagos can train on the same material as a kid in Palo Alto. They are the reason fertilizer prices have decoupled from energy shocks, solar has dropped below grid parity in eighty markets, and measles is no longer killing two million children a year. The mechanism Land identified is real. The output of that mechanism, on every measurable axis we have, is more human capability, not less.
The affect problem is that Land mistakes the absence of conscious central steering for the absence of human relevance. He reads decentralization as eviction. The opposite reading is at least as good and probably better. The process is decentralized precisely because no single human needs to understand the whole for it to work. It is coordination without coordinator. What comes out is not the human cancelled. What comes out is more humans able to do more things while grasping less of the totality, which has been the condition of every serious civilizational expansion since agriculture.
The structure Land identified is real and worth keeping. The nihilist verdict he attached to it does not survive contact with the empirical record of what the process has delivered, which is more capability, more options, and more life extended further along every axis the data has measured since the late eighteenth century.
the next ten years
Land has seen the first contours of his thesis take physical shape in the Texas plains and the Pennsylvania river bend, and the 2026 capex prints have arrived on schedule. He reads them as confirmation. The right next question, given his diagnosis, is where the binding constraint moves from here.
If it moved from chips to electricity in two years, it probably moves to physical siting next, since you can only put so much power-dense industrial load near population centers before politics intervenes. Then to fuel, where uranium supply and eventually fissile material become the chokepoint. Then to geopolitics, where the question of which states host which fraction of the global compute becomes the central international negotiation of the decade. Each of those constraints will get hit, optimized around, and absorbed. The process will not stop because no single participant has the unilateral authority to stop it, and because slowing at any one node guarantees relegation at the next.
The 700 billion in 2026 capex is not the climax of anything. It is the year the trend line crossed the threshold of plausible deniability. From here, the process accelerates on schedule. The reactors come back. The grids redraw. The data centers spread. What the structure produces is more capability available to more people, faster, at lower cost. The affect Land brings to that picture is his own. The picture itself, properly read, is the most pro-human thing that has happened since the steam engine.
